Per information from Israel, a minimum of 98 detainees from Palestine have perished while in custody beginning in October 2023. A human rights group operating from Israel has indicated that the real number is almost certainly significantly higher, because of hundreds of missing people in Gaza.

“In spite of this mass number of casualties, over two years no one has been detained,” the official said. “There are no prosecutions over any death.

“During the time these practices remain in effect, each Palestinian individual in custody faces risk, including the healthy ones, even the juveniles who have no health problems.”

Notable Incidents

Some deaths in confinement have been publicly known, for instance a 50-year-old healthcare leader who died in prison after 120 days in detention.

An inmate incarcerated with the victim reported that he was taken to the yard by correctional officers immediately preceding his death, clearly wounded and naked from the lower body. His remains has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Other prisoners who died in detention in Israel remain anonymous. Correctional authorities and defense forces supplied investigators with the number of fatalities in detention, and minimal other details including the site where they lost their lives, but without the detainees’ identities.

Documentation Problems

For 21 instances, primarily detainees from Gaza, analysts were unable to connect the few details supplied by officials to a death recorded by rights organisations, either through accounts from released detainees or reporting in the press.

The inmates’ next of kin may not know about their relatives’ casualties either, as Israel has impeded efforts to track Palestinian individuals it is holding. During 210 days at the beginning of the conflict, the armed services refused to supply fundamental details about the whereabouts of many of individuals held in Gaza, practically carrying out a practice of forced disappearance, per the human rights group.
